How to connect a Mac OSX laptop to Laerdal conference room TV monitors
This document details the process to connect Mac OSX devices to Laerdal conference room TV monitors.
*Note:
This procedure applies to Mac OSX versions El Capitan v10.11 through High Sierra v10.13 or higher.
This procedure is required for Lenovo and HP port replicators. It is not required for the newer “Icy Box” brand units that are present in some conference areas.
Mac OSX requires drivers to be installed in order to use the USB output on the laptop for display to a TV monitor. The driver package is located here for a user’s ease of access: smb://nysrv004/MacLink. Since the installer is located on a server in Laerdal NY, you will need to provide your network credentials in order to access the location:
When the folder opens, Right Click on the file named DisplayLink Installer 4.1.11.dmg and save it to your Mac Desktop or other preferred location.
Go to downloaded file folder (eg. Desktop) and double click the .dmg file. Install will begin. Follow the following images during the installation:
*Click continue or next on the install screens until input is requested*
Follow the prompts:
** Reboot will be needed
Enter local Mac user name (not network user) *must be an Admin on Mac to install
Continue until you see the Success message, click Restart.
Open Mac System Preferences and click the “Displays” icon:
Make sure you select the “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available” check box:
In the conference room, locate the USB cable (usually located on the top of table) that is connected to the port replicator.
Plug the USB cable into a USB port on the Mac. *Note: Some older, even newer Macbooks are particular about which USB port they will work correctly with when using external displays. Play it safe and plug into the one on the RIGHT side of the Mac. It always works!
Next, you have to select which input on the TV is using the port replicator connection. This could vary from conference room to conference room. Most commonly, HDMI2 or “Port Replicator” are the correct selections. To change the input to the correct one, you will need the remote for the TV itself. Press the input button on the remote until you get the correct input. You will when its correct because the “no signal” message on the TV screen will disappear.
On your Menu Bar you will see an icon that looks like a small TV. Right Click on it and make sure the option to “Use as Separate Display” is selected,
Your Mac Desktop should now be extended to the TV and you can drag items over from your desktop display to the TV screen (extended display) for viewing.
When you’re done, simply unplug the USB cable and your built in display will be as normal
